The Ibadan maiden edition of anti-quackery walk organised by Nurses Revolutio was held on 7th December, 2019 at Monatan Iwo road, Ibadan.
The eventful programme against this health fraud called quackery had in attendance 23 Registered Nurses who went to some streets in the heart of Ibadan to sensitize the public by informing the uninformed and correcting the misinformed about who nurses really are, how to identify a Registered Nurse and a quack and the dangers of quackery practices to the health of members of our society.
The campaign which lasted for more than two hours commenced some minutes past 10am in some strategic areas of Iwo road such as market and shops, populated streets, major roads and garages starting from the venue (Texaco bustop, beside MRS filling Station, Monatan Street, Iwo road) which has been set to provide free medical assessment and Health Education for the people in the community immediately after the walk and continued towards Iyana Oja and Oja Academy including Iwo road under bridge towards Ojoo road then linked back to Texaco bus stop through Amuda Ojere route.
While the sensitization was ongoing by some adorable nurses using the three major languages (Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa) in Nigeria via public address system, some nurses were distributing flyers and stickers, and some were engaging the public in one-on-one conversation on the role and identity of a Certified Nurse.
After the sensitization, every participant returned to the venue where the free medical assessment and health education were provided. More than 35 members of the community were duly assessed through weighing, vital signs check and free laboratory investigations like Blood Glucose Test, HIV Test. Some people were given medications (supplements) when necessary and referrals were made as appropriate.
The Campaign coupled with the free medical assessment which ended around 2:30pm was a success despite all trials and odds.
Quackery is a national problem and we must all treat it as one; esteeming the life of one another above favoritism is key.
